Socializing meets science at the Fishbowl

Discovery Place Science

CHARLOTTE – Discovery Place Science is opening a new aquarium – of sorts – and welcoming adults to serve as its inhabitants.

The Fishbowl will be open on select Fridays beginning June 7 at the Tryon Street entrance of the Museum. The pop-up bar experiment invites guests to come and enjoy science-based cocktails as well as hands-on learning experiences centered around, of course, science.

“For several years, the Museum has hosted Science on the Rocks events once a month for adults and it has seen great success. But we’ve noticed that many adults want more – more science, more innovation and more often. The Fishbowl is going to deliver that experience,” says Barrett Long, assistant vice president of Museum operations. “This is really where socializing is going to meet science in a way that invites visitors to dive deeper into how the world around us works. It’s going to be a one-of-a-kind experience.”

Science-based activities will be featured throughout the intimate lounge space, including staff-led presentations guaranteed to wow guests as well as self-guided, hands-on experiences at various spots within the Fishbowl. Science topics to be covered include everything from fire and ice to animal encounters.

Science-themed cocktails (think dry ice, liquid nitrogen, beakers, test tubes and more) will be prepared each evening by mixologist Matt Caspento from Halcyon. The drinks themselves will become topics of discussion as guests learn the science behind them and better understand the ingredients within them.

Weather permitting, the science fun will spill out onto a spacious patio adjacent to the Fishbowl, offering guests a new outdoor space to enjoy Friday evenings in uptown.

The Fishbowl will be open on select Fridays in June and July from 5:30-10 p.m. Guests must be 21 years or older and there is no cover charge. Access to the full Museum will not be available.
