Teacher Advisory Board

Discovery Place Education Studio recently hosted the inaugural meeting of its new Teacher Advisory Board.

The board’s role is to help evaluate new school programs and professional development opportunities for the Education Studio and Discovery Place museums.

Board members represent a wide facet of educational opportunities throughout the Carolinas, including public (traditional and magnet), charter and private schools, from elementary to the college and university setting.

Participants described the group as “passionate, strong, visionary, educated and opinionated.”

These dedicated educators have chosen to provide their keen perspective and educational insights to help Discovery Place serve our surrounding K-12 community with the best possible professional development, outreach, field trips and lab classes.

“What a thrilling opportunity it is to gather as educators and reflect on the many incredible offerings and opportunities available at Discovery Place,” said Lori Townsend. “To be part of the conversation surrounding the vision of where the museums plan to go in the future, is both exciting and inspiring. It is a unique privilege to serve in a capacity that will support the ongoing education of so many children in our area.”

Each of these educators will help drive Discovery Place museums and the Education Studio forward as our staff continues to evaluate how we can engage and enrich students in science, technology, engineering and math.

As an added bonus, board members welcomed the chance to collaborate with a diverse group of educators.

“Being a part of the Advisory Board allowed me to interact with teachers on a deeper level and share our thoughts about increasing rigor and hands-on learning for students when visiting the Museum,” said Amanda Bombassaro. “I left our first session feeling rejuvenated, excited for the future of the Museum, and inspired with the ideas that were shared on the project board. I look forward to many more positive sessions.”
