Discovery Place Science, Ingersoll Rand to spotlight environmental sustainability

Discovery Place Science

CHARLOTTE – Discovery Place Science is teaming up with Ingersoll Rand, a world leader in creating comfortable, sustainable and efficient environments, to spotlight and enhance sustainability practices in the Museum and throughout Charlotte.

Through a $340,000 grant from the Ingersoll Rand Foundation, Discovery Place Science is advancing its efforts aimed at providing education and engagement opportunities that create a more environmentally aware community while also leading by example to strengthen the sustainability of Museum operations.

Ingersoll Rand (NYSE:IR), known for its strategic brands Thermo King® and Trane®, recently announced its 2030 Sustainability Commitments, which challenge the company to further address global issues and be the brand the world looks to for solutions that reduce energy dependence and emissions, and preserve food, water and other natural resources.

“As a science museum, we especially recognize the importance of balancing worldly developments with ensuring that resources remain available for generations to come. In partnering with Ingersoll Rand, our Museum is able to bring sustainability even further to the forefront of our work – both in what we provide in terms of visitor experiences and education as well as our own actions as a longstanding member of the Charlotte community.”

Ingersoll Rand sustainability, STEM, buildings and transport efficiency experts will join Museum educators to conduct monthly programs for visitors highlighting environmental principles and the roles individuals can play to improve the environment. Programs will be held inside the Explore More Life lab on Level 1 of the Museum and will touch on a variety of topics, including career paths in environmental science, personal actions to create a more sustainable environment, sustainability concepts and philosophies and more.

Discovery Place Science and Ingersoll Rand, will jointly launch a Sustainability Speaker Series starting in 2020, bringing in experts and thought leaders to inspire and engage with Charlotte audiences at special Museum events.

The partnership will include creating a Green Team at Discovery Place Science, which will work to assess and identify areas of Museum operation that could become more sustainable. This can include anything from the products and materials purchased by the Museum and the consumables used in programming to signage and use of office space.
